1. Help! I can't access the databases from off-campus.

There are several possible solutions to this problem:

1. If you reach the Trinity login page (it will say "Access restricted to current students, faculty, and staff.), enter the same login and password that you use for your email, Moodle, etc. If you can't remember them, or if what you're using isn't working, call the IT Help Desk at 708-239-4858.

2. If you see an error message instead of the login page (a message you might receive is "This site can't be reached" or "The site took too long to respond")...
    a. If you're at home, check your internet connection and/or another internet browser. Are other websites loading okay? If so, contact the library (708-293-4925 or so we can try to figure out what's going wrong. If it's the weekend, we may not be able to get back to you right away, but we'll do our best to help you fix things and get on with life.
    b. If you're at work, try a different internet browser. If that doesn't work, the settings of your business/school network may not be playing nicely with the system we use to allow you to log in from off-campus. That's a known problem with no known solution.

If you're using ERIC, the good news is that there's a freely available alternative that you can use to get started on your searching:  When you find something there that doesn't have full text available, look for that article when you are able to log in to the databases to see if the library provides access to that article (we just might!).

2. How do I create an online account?

Fill out the User Account form. We recommend using the same username and password as you use for your Trinity email (so you don't have to remember yet another password!).

The Borrower ID is the barcode number from the front of your ID card, without the dashes (-).

3. How do I get the full-text of an article I didn't find through a database?

Databases are only one of many ways to discover articles--other ways include using the references on articles you already have, using the references in books/encyclopedias, or even using search engines.

You can find out if we have access to that article by using the Periodicals A-Z link from the Library homepage or the Find a Publication link on any subject guide. After that, find the CitationLinker tab and put the article's information into the form.

4. How do I get the full-text of an article/item I've found in a database?

It depends! Many times, the PDF or HTML text will be linked right there in the database. Other times, you'll see the Find It button.

If you click the Find It button, it will check whether we have access to that article/item in any fashion, whether online text or maybe a print copy at the library. If we don't have access, you will have the option to request it.

5. How do I renew my library items?

You're welcome to call the library about renewing your books/CDs/DVDs/etc., but many library items can also be renewed online by logging in to your account (you'll need to create an account, if you don't have one already).

I-Share (ILL or interlibrary loan) books can only be renewed online. If your attempt to renew is unsuccessful, you'll need to return the item by the original due date or risk accumulating overdue fines.

7. How long does it take for an interlibrary loan item from I-Share to arrive?

Most items arrive within 5 business days, weather permitting.

8. I need information about a specific culture/people group. Where can I look?

Where to look depends on what type of information you need, but there are a variety of resources available:

  • Nursing students: look at call numbers RA418.5 and RT86.54.
  • Social work students: browse around call number HV3176.
  • Others: try searching the catalog for the terms cross-cultural and your subject (for example, cross-cultural business).

9. If I can't come to Trinity's library, where else can I go?

Members of the Trinity community (students, faculty, and staff) automatically have access to a number of college and university libraries across the state of Illinois. You can use the library facilities and borrow materials directly from any of the libraries on this map. All you'll need is your Trinity ID!

11. What is evidence-based practice?

According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health, Evidence-based practice is the process by which health care providers incorporate the best research or evidence into clinical practice in combination with clinical expertise and within the context of patient values.

In the nursing database CINAHL there is a checkbox for retrieving articles with and emphasis on evidence based practice.

12. Why should I create an online library account?

Here are just a few reasons:
  • Keep track of item due dates
  • Renew items online
  • Request items from any of our cooperating libraries
  • Check the status of requested items
  • Set preferences like where to pick up any items you've requested

13. Why was my I-Share request for an item rejected?

Some items are never allowed to be checked out or requested through I-Share.

Some college libraries never lend out certain items, such as textbooks, CDs, or DVDs to people who are not students or faculty at that college.

You may have a fine on your account that is resulting in a ban from requesting books.
